Fernando Alonso said the pole scoring position for the Grand Prix of Great Britain came as a surprise, the Ferrari driver even going so far as to admit that he had been lucky.
Ferrari team says pole was a surprise given conditions
Alonso said, and both his first pole of the Scuderia since 2010 on another day soaked Silverstone - the session of one hour has to be delayed for 90 minutes, when heavy rains began to fall.
The Spanish described the conditions as a game of chance and luck to have two rolls of the dice after two particularly hairy moments.
Alonso first came out early in the second session when his car aquaplaned out of control coming out of the Becketts complex and avoided contact with a wall.
Then, following the rain stop, Alonso found himself on the verge of being knocked out.
However, despite bearing down on the yellow flags at the end of lap final - a consequence of Romain Grosjean around Lotus - which only managed to progress.
Describe the challenges faced, Alonso said: "In wet conditions you never know they have to be in the right place at the right time with the circuit in the best conditions to make the turn.
"That turns must be clean, with large errors. Here and there, or you can always lose a little better. Never know exactly the conditions of the next corner, when you arrive on a day like today.
"It may be a little bit drier previous lap. We saw a few drops of rain on the visor and can be a bit more humid. So it's a little (as) gambling with attachment.
"So when you are in pole position is a bit surprising."
Alonso received a round of applause in the press room after his turn Silverstone out of one of the fastest corners of the track - one that many drivers have struggled so far this weekend.
But he said to survive the time it was more a case of luck than judgment.
"It was very big, but you are not in control of the car. You have to be lucky and we were lucky today. With that point in Q2, with all the decisions we have had with the tires ... it was the most appropriate " he said.
"And on the last lap, to put the hip at the same time - that luck too, because the distance (second placed qualifier) Mark (Webber) is milliseconds."
In the last breath the progress of double world champion into Q3 was questioned by Paul di Resta, who left as a result and the thought of Alonso did not stop long enough for the yellow.
Alonso, perhaps predictably, had a different opinion and said, "I did not set a green area in particular that turn yellow.
"I went back on the area where they were taking the car. I have no concern."
