The midfielder Custodio freely admits that "the arms of Portugal are not a secret" and "play in the same style," as always, when they face Spain on Wednesday in the semifinals.
According to the picturesque scenery of Portugal training camp away from the hustle and bustle of the city, there is an atmosphere of calm between the equipment marked as the semifinal against Spain approaches. While some have been here before, there is a sense of wonder and adventure shared by many, as Custodian. When the 16 finalist teams announced on May 29, the midfielder was the oldest player named uncapped.
Football advancing, and so has Custodio. Four days later he made his debut with the Selecção das Quinas in the final pre-tournament friendly against Turkey, and has appeared twice in the UEFA EURO 2012 as an alternate in wins over the Netherlands and Czech Republic. He laughs at the suggestion of a journalist who has become a sort of "talisman" for the team, although they quickly moved beyond the feeling of being a newcomer.
"We all share the same goals," he said. "In that sense, no matter who starts or ends the game." SC Braga midfielder, who celebrated his 29th birthday in the early days of camp training squad prior to the tournament in Obidos, knows that it is almost certain to start on the bench again to play in Spain, with the consistency of the selection key to the plans of Paulo Bento.
"Our weapons are not a secret," he smiles. "We use them every game, and we will play in the same style we have in every other game so far. We will try to be aggressive when we have the ball. We are very comfortable with the game plan, and believe in the ideas of the coach. "
Custodian has no illusions about the task ahead against the holders and world champions. Andres Iniesta stands out as a "phenomenal player" but insists Portugal, will have its opportunity to bring their own strengths to bear. "[Spain] have a great quality," he said. "They are very good on the ball. When we have it, we must be prepared to show the quality we have and show we are a great team too."
The former Sporting Clube de Portugal, the man known to focus on his old club-mate Cristiano Ronaldo. The captain of Portugal is set to play against some of his current colleagues Real Madrid CF, that knowledge will be enough for Spain to stop it? "I honestly do not think so," Custodio said. "Everyone knows Christian and his qualities. He is the most complete player I know, both in physical and technical."
The Trust has also been built by now enjoying a family environment. "I did not know much about Poland before coming here," said Custodio. "But the training is great and everyone has been great for us. When we had the opportunity to go to town [Poznan], we also found that people are very kind and friendly." Locals share the hope that his team Custódio be dismissed on the way to Kiev.
