England exit with heads held high
When England reached the UEFA EURO 2012, expectations were at their lowest point ever. A change management and injuries to several key players had left many wondering if the team even make it out of your group. However, the appointment of Roy Hodgson reinvigorated the team and, after four flexible displays, Steven Gerrard and company go home with heads held high.
In one wordGiven the limited preparation time available, Hodgson did an excellent job in organizing his troops in a unit that was very hard to beat. England may have lacked a touch, but his pragmatic approach earned them a first place finish in Group D ahead of favorites France. In the end, England were outclassed by Italy in the quarterfinals, but his courage and determination ultimately means that sanctions only separated from the Three Lions from the first semifinal since Euro '96.
High pointHaving taken the lead in their second group game against Sweden, England off for 15 minutes after the break and suddenly found himself 2-1 down. The defeat would have left with a mountain to climb, but Hodgson responded cleverly. The introduction of Theo Walcott was inspired as Arsenal FC striker crashed into a long-range equalizer before turning on the turbo to give the first blow to Danny Welbeck a late winner to business. It was a good show of character of the team and the evidence that England had a bit of style and substance.
Key manSteven Gerrard has been a revelation since assuming the captaincy. Liverpool FC midfielder, as long as England openers crossings in the three group matches, but visits were only part of the 32 years of age, the total contribution. A leader by example in the field, Gerrard was so influential outside it, maturing in the role of captain and exuding calm resolve everything.
Hope for the FutureEngland traveled to Poland and Ukraine with the youngest team in second behind Germany but promising performances of Danny Welbeck, Andy Carroll and Theo Walcott and teenage striker Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, gave fans plenty of reasons to believe there is enough talent that comes through a bright future international.
Vital StatisticsWith only three goals conceded in four games in the UEFA EURO 2012 gives a clear indication of how England, Hodgson will be a difficult proposition for any party in the coming years.
One last word"We've given everything, but they were not good enough in 120 minutes when it went to penalties, it was, as so often in England. We're unbeaten in normal time, but we go home because we can do "t win on penalties." England, Roy Hodgson, rues further from the point of disgrace.
