Former Polish striker Andrzej Szarmach had an excellent international career in which he scored 32 goals in 61 games and the Ambassador of UEFA EURO 2012 took time out of his schedule to talk to UEFA.com and respond to selected tweets users. The former Auxerre man AJ had his opinion about the tournament thus far, that he thinks will top the scoring charts and what are the positive aspects of co-hosting the tournament are in their homeland.
UEFA.com: What are your thoughts on the UEFA EURO 2012 so far?
Andrzej Szarmach: In the group stage of the Netherlands was very disappointing because it failed to win any points. Sweden played very well in his last game, but unfortunately that did not stop them leaving. There have been some surprises, such as Poland and Russia did not qualify from Group A as were the two teams had been advised to go before the tournament began. Unfortunately football is one of those sports where favorites are still paper in the field is not the case.
All parties have been very interesting. There has been no goalless draws and failure have been goals in every game is important not only for players but also for the fans. I agree with the majority of football fans who are any good quality in this tournament.
UEFA.com: As a former striker, who you think will be the top scorer in this tournament?
Szarmach: Cristiano Ronaldo began badly and faced criticism, but then scored a few goals and I think it will become the top scorer.
UEFA.com: How to organize this tournament from the influence of Poland as a country?
Szarmach: be positive, especially in terms of how much has been done with the stadiums, roads and hotels. All this gives a very good impression, along with the atmosphere in this tournament. I think many people a lot of different foreign countries are very happy with the tournament, and after the tournament a lot of people will come to Poland.
UEFA.com: What is your best memory of all the games you've played and been involved in tournaments?
Szarmach: I participated in three tournaments of the World Cup: 1974 in Germany 1978 in Argentina and 1982 in Spain. He also played in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, Canada. The best memories I have are of that tournament for the first time in 1974 and went into the tournament as "the team to beat." Personally, it was also for me to get the Golden Boot for the tournament by scoring five goals and was named the springboard for my career.
UEFA.com: What were your favorite targets?
Szarmach: Some were pleasant and some were the most important. A good goal I scored, which is still shown on television, even today, was the goal in the third game of the group stage at the World Cup in Germany against Italy. I scored with a header and was one of the most important I scored in my career. The most important goal was the Olympics in Montreal, where we were playing a tough team and have scored a last minute winner that got us into the final.
